(More customer reviews)I searched for a flat-screen tv for a couple of months, and finally chose the 4665. I chose the size of the TV based on my room, and decided 50 was too big and 42 too small. This left me without a decision on plasma vs lcd, which was ok with me. Plasma has more basic issues, and going LCD was not a sacrifice - except I had yet to see a LCD with black blacks, so I was not sure what I would see in the 46" range.

As for price range, I decided that I was going to buy the tv that I was happiest with. It was not that I have unlimited budget, just that I wanted to make sure that I would going to be completely satisfied with a 2-3k purchase. I really only knew about the plasma tv's in 42" 720p, so I had a lot of research to do to understand what to buy.

After reading hundreds of reviews and going to several stores to comparison shop, I was basically down to three Samsung models. I was considering the LN-T4665F, LN-T4661F and the LNS4696. Going straight by the specs, the 4665 looked to be the best because of the 15000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. With this in mind, I was confused to see that BestBuy has the 4696 in their Magnolia section and not the 4665 - my only guess is that it is because the 4665 does not have a cableCard slot.

After lots of playing I was more than happy with each of the TVs, and my choices were narrowed down by wanting more hdmi's right on the set, wanting the best possible contrast, and the glossy screen on the 4665. I have seen several complaints about the glossy screen, however this was a selling feature for me - for the same reason that I ordered a MacBook Pro with the glossy screen - I just think that it makes moves look better. I can deal with reflection during the day to get a picture that I am happier with when watching a movie at night.

I must say that I am extremely impressed so far. I have not had a single image problem yet, and the setup was clearly the worst part of this tv. All-in-all, I am 100% satisfied with this purchase.

So here's my brief summary of the high/low points:

Pros:
1. (3) HDMI inputs
2. Excellent contrast - forget the numbers, as they are fiction - the blacks are black
3. Glossy screen - movies spectacular - Toy Story is mind-blowing!
4. Weight - This is one of the newer, lighter sets
5. Price - Not that this set was cheap, but I liked this over the Sony and would have spent another $1,000 to get a comparable Sony - and I hate the glass around the Sony's

Cons:
1. No cableCard slot - really only matters if you want to mount it on the wall

That's how I see it. I give this TV my highest endorsement.

Sharp Aquos LC32D44U 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV Review

(More customer reviews)I have both this TV as well as a Samsung LN-T2642H. It's very interesting to compare the two TV's performances. If you want the more balanced natural look, go with Sharp. If you're more interested in a vivid, colorful image go with Samsung. I also did an extended look at the Toshiba 26HL67.

There is a key difference between the panels Sharp uses compared to others. Sharp's TVs are made with panels called S-IPS while Samsung, Sony and Toshiba currently use a panel called S-PVA. This has everything to do with why Samsung, Sony and Toshiba have very strong color but one thing I noticed about Samsung is that when you look at it for a slightly low angle, the color gets darker and starts to invert. If you look it from above, the color gets lighter and starts to invert. With the Sharp, no matter what angle I look at it, the color doesn't change AT ALL! This is very impressive and cool!

I also notice that when I played around with the TV settings, it doesn't need much to look good, it almost always does. When you turn on the Active Contrast mode on the Sharp (it's equivalent to DNIe), it doesn't totally knock out the details in darker areas. At first, I had to keep checking to see if it was on or not because I was so used to the way the Samsung crushes black details even on the Low setting. Once again, I was more impress with the way this TV addresses contrast in fact I think the Sharp does a better job with contrast because of its black color.

The Sharp's black color is closer to black than the Samsung. The black color on the Samsung is more of a dark blue even on Warm temperature (it's especially noticably at slight vertical angles) but with the Sharp the black was much closer to real black.

The speakers on the Sharp doesn't distort at volume levels higher than 30. With the Samsung, when u turn the volume up pass 30, the bass tends to distort the fidelity of all the sound resulting in a buzz. This is probably due to the build of the unit and the lower wattage for the speakers. Sharp doesn't sound perfect either but it's definitely warmer and clearer at high volumes thanks to having 10 watts per speaker instead of 5. I would recommend everyone to get a 2.1 speaker for any LCD TV though. Take advantage of those sound outputs on the back of your TV! :) It definitely takes your experience to a higher level!

One minus I have with the Sharp was that it didn't have a headphone jack.

Overall, I think this is an excellent 32" TV. Sharp is definitely worth a look and probably my new LCD manufacturer of choice. It doesn't need as much tweaking when you switch between uses. I tested both TVs with PC (via DVI>HDMI), Xbox 360, HDTV, SDTV, HD-DVDs and upconverted DVDs. With the Samsung, I find myself always tweaking the settings between uses like changing the Energy Saving level, turning up the Digital NR for SDTV, turning it off for everything else, toning down the DNIe.

Thanks to Sharp's OPC, the backlight adjust very intelligently based on what's on the screen. I just leave the Active Contrast on because I know I'm not missing out darker details, the picture is very sharp and the panel is slightly faster thanks to the 6ms speed, which equals less motion blur with things like text and more solid image overall.

This Sharp is the real deal and reminds me much more of a CRT than the Samsung because the Samsung requires too much twinkering to get things comfortable. I think if the Samsung's black was more like true black and the vertical angle didnt distort so much I wouldn't tweak it as often.

So in summary, if you want the most vibrant colors and don't mind tweaking between uses by all means get a Samsung. (I still like the Samsung and would give it a 4 out of 5)

If you want a more, natural looking picture, that doesn't offer or require as much tweaking because it just plain looks good, go with a Sharp.

I think Toshiba and Sony TVs tend to do a better job with black crush and black color than Samsung but since the panels are the same technology (S-PVA), they still have the vibrant color and probably some vertical viewing weirdness.

(More customer reviews)This is my first HD television.I know, it's about time!Well, I didn't want to spend $5,000 for a TV set.A friend told us about this set at Sam's Club that was on sale for less than $900.We compared it to other brands and were amazed at the clarity and sharpness.Side by side with other sets, LCD and plasma, the picture on this Vizio set was in the top of the pack.

When we got it home, we couldn't wait to see it in action in our living room.After unpacking our new HD DVD player and a new HD DVD disc, we were finally able to see it under actual home viewing conditions.The first thing that we noticed was that the new TV, out of the box, needed color, contrast, brightness, and tint adjustments.So, for about 30 minutes we tweaked, adjusted, and scrutinized the adjustments until they were almost perfect.

Although my wife and I are in our early 50s and our eyesight isn't as great as it once was, I found the optimum viewing distance to be closer than I had thought; about 12 feet works better than 16 feet.This makes the set ideal for most bedrooms and living rooms.

One of the more impressive technical features is the myriad of input connections that are available on the set, including two HDMI inputs.You can even use it as a computer monitor!

I am sure that there are bigger and better sets out there, but for the price it is a fantastic value ($897).We saved enough to buy the HD DVD player, some HD Video discs, and upgrade our DirecTv system to HD.

(More customer reviews)For the first year, Toshiba has badged all of its LCD HDTV models as "Regza" which stands for Real Expression Guaranteed by amaZing Architecture.And amazing architecture is what you first notice when you get this 42" 1080p LCD HDTV home.The piano black finish is currently in vogue with high end electronics manufacturers, but upon close inspection the black is actually covered with metallic flakes that give it a deep luster and shine.The soundstrip speaker with SRS Wow technology and formidable bass reproduction is recessed neatly along with an accompanyingbrushed stainless steel strip along the bottom.The TV is solidly connected to a swiveling base which extends several inches in front of the stand in a large crescent shape to lend stability to the set when it is placed on a tabletop or shelf.The inputs are neatly recessed in the back facing downward for ease of access if and when the set is mounted on the wall.All in all, when turned off, this TV serves as a cosmetically appealing centerpiece to a living room or den.

Be prepared: when connected to SDTV (or basic terrestrial cable), the channels appear grainy and washed out.This is because HDTV's all display SDTV fairly poorly; they are equipped to handle much higher resolution sources.So, when connected to a 480i source such as SDTV cable, the picture is poor compared to a CRT TV, whose native resolution is 480 lines of resolution.Prepare, when upgrading to any 1080p set, to purchase a cable or DrectTV package with HD channel programming.If you're hesitant to upgrade to HD broadcasting, probably put off the purchase of any HDTV capable of displaying 1080p, and either buy a larger CRT TV or an HDTV only capable of handling 720p.

Toshiba REGZA LCD TV's incorporate what is called CineSpeed into their panels.This essentially means the set employs an 8 milisecond or faster response time for refreshing the image displayed on the screen.For fast moving situations like sports, or high contrast movies with action packed sequences, this feature is invaluable.All previous ghosting associated with LCD TV's has been eliminated, and even bright white objects moving across a dark background look smooth, true to their color, and leave no trail.DynaLight dynamic back light control makes the black truly black, and the whites vivid (almost comparable to plasma TV's with 10,000:1 contrast ratios).Other features unique to this Toshiba Regza TV are ColorBurst wide color gamut and PixelPure 3G 14-bit internal digital video processing.These options, together, make the picture displayed from 1080 p sources unbelievably clear and flawlessly reproduced without overscanning.

In response to a review posted for this TV, VGA is a virtually obsolete connection.Most high end computers use either DVI (which is also mediocre) and higher quality media center PC's with Windows Vista premium use an HDMI compatible graphics processing unit with an HD rated display.Few TV's allow a 1080p source from a VGA connection.XBox 360's downfall was not using HDMI compatible hardware - this is additionally where the Playstation 3 far exceeds the XBox 360 in terms of hardware with built in blu-ray that incidentally looks outstanding in 1080p with this TV, but also using HDMI as a connection method.This set is comparable in terms of response time and dynamic contrast ratio to the higher priced LG 42" 1080p model, and beats it in terms of picture tweaking options.The Sharp 42" Aquos 1080p HDTV has a horrible (1,200:1) contrast ratio and is almost not worth purchasing unless you plan on sitting directly in front of the TV.Also, if you plan to sit 2 inches in front of your TV, you probably aren't intelligent enough to own one - the difference between 720p/1080i and 1080p is only noticeable based on how close you are sitting to the television and 2 inches would be close enough to notice jagged edges in even ultra XHD or cinema digital which displays beyond 1080p.Close enough, all smooth lines look jagged and that is the nature of the pixel - pixels are square, therefore all curved lines are composed of a series of straight edges.

Also, LG's comparable 42" 1080p HDTV is less than 100 dollars more expensive than this Toshiba, and for the record, LG is only in its second generation of LCD TV's whereas Toshiba is in its 3rd generation (this is the first year for the Regza badge).

If you're upset about the component inputs and the VGA not handling a full 1080p signal, buy a 1080p upconverting DVD player (under 100 dollars now) with an HDMI output (I suggest Samsung's DVD1080P7 which has an optical out if you want to hook up to a home theater system).This TV has 3 HDMI inputs and can more than handle all your AV needs.In all, this Toshiba model outdoes Sony's XBR Bravia, Sharp's Aquos, LG, and Samsung models.The dynamic contrast ratio, coupled with the Pixel Pure 14bit processing power produces a sharp, clear picture with unbelievable smoothness, clarity, and vivid realistic color reproduction.In addition, this is one of the only TV's in the under $2,000 range that includes a remote that can be used as a practical universal remote.Some techies love their fancy touchscreen universal remotes a la Logitech Harmony 1000, but this remote is solid, has great range, and is a fitting match to the solid TV it is paired with.Not at all the cheap hunk of plastic you get with the current Sharp LCD TV's on the market.

The price of this TV, which encompasses a design quality shared with $3500 Toshiba Regza sets, unique Toshiba features like CineSpeed and Colorburst,1080p native resolution, and 3 HDMI inputs make it the best value under $2,000 and comparable to much more expensive sets.Whether an audiophile or just someone looking for a great affordable LCD HDTV, this set delivers.

VIZIO SV421XVT 42-Inch XVT-Series 240 Hz SPS LCD HDTV Review

(More customer reviews)The Vizio SV421XVT, is a very nice 42 inch lcd TV. With 120hz refresh rate, and 240hz scenes per second, this television offers depth perception found only in high end LED TVs. But it is not all gum drops and fairy tales.

This Vizio does NOT offer the bluetooth remote and internet apps. The TruSurround and TruVolumn leave a lot to be desired, and then, you have the Zero Bright Pixel Defect Guarantee, which in reality is not much of a guarantee at all.

I have taken much time compiling the info for this review, and I want to be very clear on one fact, Amazon's Customer Support is true American loyalty. The staff is top notch!

Vizio is the leading TV seller in the US due to its calibrations with Wal-Mart, Sears, Dell, and Amazon. Our experience with Vizio has been a rocky one.

We are very particular about our lcd TVs and we bought this SV421XVT based solely on the Zero Bright Pixel Guarantee. We called Vizio 3 times before purchase to make sure that this guarantee covers "stuck, bright, and dead" pixels. Their answer, YES!

We could not find this within 100 miles of our home, Vizio wanted $1600 + for it, and Dell has poor customer support in addition to not standing behind Vizio's Zero Bright Pixel Defect guarantee. So we opted for Amazon, free shipping, A-Z guarantee, and NO SALES TAX!

The first Vizio we received through Amazon came via Pilot. Pilot is a very terrible delivery service, at least in Southern Ohio. No precalls, and our television sat 1hour away for 5 days, before delivery. Then to top that off, we had to press them to deliver it by the latest date of delivery, for they wanted to wait an additional 5 days.

When the Vizio arrived in our home it had a stuck pixel, stuck in the red cycle of red, green, and blue, and it also had a video overlay problem. We called Amazon and they were very helpful, not 5 minutes on the phone, and a new one was shipped that day, for a switch out in our home.

That is when Pilot dropped the ball again. They delivered our replacement but once more failed to precall and had a very lazy attitude towards the delivery. When they arrived, they stated they had no paper work for the pick up of the unit with the stuck pixel and informed us they were required to leave both TVs at our home. So once again a call to Amazon. Amazon was once more VERY VERY helpful and had Pilot back to our home the very next.

Again we had to press pilot for a pick - up time, and when they finally arrived they were an hour late. But alas the TV was returned to Amazon, and we were not charged.

But our experience with this SV421XVT does not end there. The second unit delivered to our home had a red stuck pixel and again a video overlay issue. The video overlay issue is only visible on 720p where is appears as a white vertical line down the right side on the screen, and a black vertical line at 1080p. This issue is noticeable on all HDMI inputs. Since we buy and sale HDMI cables, we were able to cycle through new cables, and verify that is was not interference within the cable. We also hooked it to a PS3 and an Xbox 360, and it was evident on both devices.

This time we decided Amazon was not responsible for Vizio's poor technology.

It is important for me to once again stress that although the screen had issues, the picture looked beautiful. The depth perception is dazzling with the Smooth Motion Technology and 50,000:1 contrast ratio, your breath will be taken away.

So a call to Vizio led us to a road block. Vizio after stating otherwise three times prior, informed us they do not cover dead/bright pixels, and that this LCD TV does not have the Zero Bright Pixel Guarantee. We had to inform them it does, and that is states it clearly on their website.

They eventually admitted that this SV421XVT does have a Zero Bright Pixel Guarantee, but it does NOT cover dead pixels, contrary to their previous answers. They also informed us that they were aware of the video overlay issue, and that most of their TVs have it, and that they do not service this problem. Mind you this all occurred over 2 days of multiple phone calls to Vizio's technical support.

We felt as if we were in the circus, for the hoops we had to jump through, just to prove we did in fact own this SV421XVT, and that is was not working properly.

Vizio demanded we take a picture of the single stuck pixel, and that the picture had to have the pixel visible, as well as show the entire front of the 42" TV. That's right, they wanted me to stand back, and be able to capture the equivalent to the end of pen, as well as display the entire front of the TV, turned on, and the Vizio logo readable. WOW! That is crazy.

Well I pressed the fact that this was not possible, and demanded they try it themselves. I asked that they send out s service man, and they said we need the pictures. I once again informed them that is was not possible, and I wanted $750 worth of perfect LCD screen, just what I paid for, so the tech. transferred me to a "Level 3" technician.

The Level 3 technician was a little easier to deal with, and after much convincing that I did in fact own this TV, and sending the best pictures possible, informed me that I would receive a white glove in home switch out.

Well 2 weeks later, a very good freight company arrived with a new TV. They unpacked the LCD and allowed us to cycle through red, green, and blue screens to insure that there were no stuck pixels. There was none. We are now happy.

To sum it up, Amazon is an A+ company. Pilot delivery is worthless. Vizio puts on a good face to sale their product, but does not want to stand behind it. The SV421XVT has a picture quality that truly high definition, but finding a unit without issues is hard.

Vizio SV421XVT - Almost perfect... almost.

UPDATE!!!!!

Please, all readers, attention. We have developed ANOTHER BIRGHT STUCK PIXEL on the right hand middle side of the screen. This time for service,we used a 10 mega pixel camera, and took multiple pictures of the tv. As Vizio requires you must have a picture of the full face plate, the pixel, and the menu. We did everything required to have our current Vizio serviced.... everything and more.

We even went as far as circling the pixel on a few pictures, the response from Vizio, we can't see it, and corporate offices cannot see it either. Vizio stated that they will not even send out a technician, because the rep. said "We will not service another, this TV without better pictures." did you read what I heard, he messed up and said "another." They seen the pixel and they know that all of thier units have them. Nice way to push the responsibility off onto the customer!

This is the third SV421XVT, we have had, it is the third to have a stuck bright pixel, and this one even has a faint over lay issue as well, which we were able to adjust out of the screen. This is the last Vizio product we ever purchase.

Hands down it does offer one of the most stunning pictures on the market, but at nearly $900 on Amazon, and over $1000, at Vizio, a company should stand behind its product and show real support for it's customer, Vizio just doesn't do it.

On a side note we own a 1 year old Sony Bravia 40" LCD, and we have had no issue what so ever from it. It is only 60hz, and has low contrast, but out of the box from Wal-Mart, we have had not a single problem! NOTHING!

My advice to Vizio... you either stand behind your products, or stand down!

(More customer reviews)I purchased the Sharp LC52D64U via a direct promotion with Sharp USA. The deal I was offered was too good to pass up. I have never bought a large format TV in my life and always got by with a Sony CRT 27" in my bedroom running SD TV. I was just fine with that for many years and when I moved into a new apartment with a nice big (and empty) living room and ordered HD cable, I decided to consider purchasing a large HD panel TV.

When I did my research, I was overwhelmed at the number of choices, formats and connections types, such as LCD, plasma, projection, 720i, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, Hdmi, HD channels recievers....argh!?!?!?!

Well after I did enough research, this Sharp LCD has everything that I need for at least the next 5 years. I am running a Tivo Series 3 HD reciever pumping 1080i HD channels over digital cable into one of the 3 available HDMI ports. The image quality is, to say the least, MAGNIFICENT!!!! The deep blacks and rich colors really cut through exceptionally well. I have not yet played an HD DVD or Blu-Ray movie through it, but if the 1080i HD channels look this great, I can only expect the same from watching Spiderman 3 on Bluray at 1080P when it's available this late October.

When I was researching large format panel TV's, my eye kept going to plasmas like Panasonics and the Elite series from Pioneer. Suffice it to say, these brands were very much out of my budget and consdered LCD's instead. So I did some research on the Aqous series and found alot of useful information. I also read many reports of the Sharp Aquos series suffering from a bad phenomenom known as "banding" and a recent review of the LC52D64U on cnet.com indicated that the problem was still present in this new model. This made me nervous about buying the TV, but then Ireminded myself that those reviewers have eyes like a hawk and scrutinize every little detail that an average consumer (like me) probably wouldn't even notice until pointed out.

Well I don't know if I can't see it, or if it is not present in my particular unit, but I have NOT experienced any "banding" issues that may appear as color bleed, ghosting effects or ongoing pixilation.

Sharp does offer Aquos models that have a higher refresh rate as much at 120 hertz. This unit, I believe, operates at a 60 hertz refresh rate. The higher 120 refresh rate is supposed to handle fast moving images (such as football player running across a field) and improve the image so as to reduce any bluriness or undesireable pixilation.

Well I do not watch alot of sports, so this is not a deal breaker for me. There were a few times I was watching a movie and saw some pixilation occurring due to fast moving images. But as long as you watch your 52" sharp LCD from a practical viewing distance and loose yourself in the entertainment and not scrutinize every single image that's on the screen, you probably won't notice it when it does occur, if at all.

Overall, I am extremely pleased with the Sharp LC52D64U. Remember that to get the most out of this LCD panel, be prepared to spend some money and feed it a high resolution data feed for both audio and video. Everything I am sending it comes in at full 1080i/1080P, if not upscaled from 720/480. I plan to get the new X-Box 360 elite and it has an HDMI output port and many of the newer games run at 1080P, so I can only imagine that there's more visual pleasure to come my way.

I hope this non-technical review was helpful. Now go out and buy this damn thing and be a happy couch potato!!! :-)

Sony Bravia V-Series KDL-46V2500 46-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV Review

(More customer reviews)I've been considering the 46V2500 for some time now. After reading the extensive forum thread on AVS as well as checking the monitor out for myself in stores, I was convinced this was the monitor for me. For those of you who are considering the XBR2/XBR3 sets, the only MAJOR differences include the glass bezel and a few additional internal settings and features (some that you probably won't even utilize much less care about). The V2500 series uses the same exact LCD panel as the XBR series. Justifying the price hike between the V 2500 and the XBR units is a matter of personal preference aesthetically. Performance-wise, the units are nearly identical.

Out of the box performance as excellent, but the monitor really shined after a few image tweaks. Fyi for anyone who has this monitor, custom tune your color settings to NOT use the "Vivid" enhancement. The image becomes way blown out and the contrast is much too high. After toning it down to standard with "neutral" color setting (along with a few other tweaks in the various sliders) I was able to get a superb picture.

I currently have an XBOX 360 connected to it through component at 1080i. I have also had a chance to check out a Blu-Ray movie on a PS3 I borrowed...which was absolutely jaw-dropping at 1080p. I also tested Ridge Racer 7 (PS3) which runs natively on 1080p and as far as resolution and clarity are concerned that's as good as it gets. I can't wait until future PS3 titles support native 1080p...people with capable sets are in for a treat. After getting a taste of true 1080p with HD content, it's hard for me to go back to anything else haha. I guess I spoiled myself a little to early.

The OSD and menus are intuitive and very easy to use. I didn't find myself going to through uneccessary menus to get to my final destination. I especially liked the feature of being able to rename my video inputs (1 through 8) with either custom tags or with a selection from a pre-determined list (DVD, GAME, SAT, etc..).

I was skeptical about the sound quality from the speakers at first, but I was pleasantly surprised by the fidelity and clarity of sound they outputted. Who knew TV speakers could sound good? I live in an apartment soI was happy that I didn't have to add a complex surround sound setup.

Shipping was safe and secure. Amazon uses Eagle Freight shipping services for this unit and they were very efficient, although tracking is updated less frequently than other carriers. Not really a downside though.

Though I had initial problems like delayed delivery and bad order processingbetween Amazon and Jr.com but i am glad that they got it delivered finally:). I was looking to buy either Sony Bravia or LNS3251D but after doing extensive research and visiting bestbuy/circuitCity etc., I and my wife decided to buy this TV.

Here are some pros and cons,

Pros:
-Good picture quality
-Good contrast ratio/resolution..better than Sony
-Black Colour
-Blazing Fast ~8ms response time which is what even sony has.
-2 HDMI connections, though they support only version 1.0 and currently HDMI specs version 1.2a are out in the market
-Lots other useful connections like 2 composite A/V (1 side), 2 S-Video (1 side), 1 component (Y/Pb/Pr), 2 HDMI, 2 RF, 1 USB, 1 RS232
-PIP
Cons:
- Till now i only found one i.e. its HDMI connections still support version 1.0 and I cannot connect my Toshiba DVD player which supports Ver1.1 HDMI specs.

This is what I liked/disliked till now.. I will update this review, if required, after playing a little bit more with its functions/features.

I have a Westinghouse (which has 67+ Reviews on Crutchfield alone, a Sharp and a Samsung) With all that said, this Toshiba puts them all to shame. All the Extras hooked up: PS3, HDTV Sat, HDTV Over Air and of course SD Sat; without any doubt this TV on a whole Blows away the competition (coming from a Die Hard SONY fan) The important stuff; 3 HDMI inputs, TV Optical Out, Ability to select Direct Input when changing Video Inputs(this is important when programming Universal Remotes), A ton of Video Settings and of course it is simply Beautiful.

Designed in the image of the Classic Sleek pricey Pioneer Elites or the always gorgeous hard to find LG LCD sets; it's absolutely clean on the outside in the surrounding fairly thin jet Black Bezel...The speakers are hidden, but yet they sound amazing(Adjustable settings). The Picture in SD is beyond ANY other I have seen on an LCD. In HD the set will blow you away, guaranteed! Over the Air reception of HD is spectacular; I picked up 10 channels (5 HD) I did not have before. My PS3 comes to life, especially in Game Mode; all this and I have no space to mention the PC input. The Remote is better than most TV Universal remotes, with the odd exception of it not having a direct on/off CC button(Odd!)..

Toshiba has truly figured it out and has set a New Bar for all those "other" Manufacturers to follow. Go compare all the specs on Crutchfield! LG 32LB9D 32-inch 720p LCD HDTV Review

(More customer reviews)I researched LCD TVs via Consumer Report, CNET, Amazon's customer reviews, and technology blogs for over a month before buying this TV (LG's 32" lineup is curiously absent from CNET and Consumer Report).In the end, it came down to two things: image quality and appearance of the panel; price was not a concern for this purchase. I went with 32" based on the size of my room (I live in a studio apartment).

Picture
The case was pretty much settled as soon as I saw the LG in the store. True, Sharp and Samsung had deeper blacks, but Sharp's became oversaturated and even their 1080p 32" set lacked detail under bright light (my living room is very bright).Samsung had strong detail, but the response time on most of their 32" models is 8ms and my eyes could see blurring.The LG had tight, crisp images with extremely accurate color and fairly dark blacks. There was no blurring or ghosting and dark scenes were rendered in excellent detail.

Design
Both Sony and Panasonic had comparable image quality to the LG and a few extra bells and whistles, but their casing had exposed logos, buttons, speakers, lights, etc.Furthermore, their panels were much thicker (the LG is only about 3" deep).Since I don't have a TV cabinet, an LCD has to be a piece of furniture in my living room and that tipped the scales in favor of the LG... thin, smooth, and shiny.It's almost discreet and will not dominate a room.

Experience
I almost fell over when I plugged in a set of cheap rabbit ears(!) and picked up the local broadcasts in HD. I could see the pinstripes in the weatherman's suit, the bag's around the newscaster's eyes, and Judge Judy's frown lines. But plugging in my AppleTV made me a believer... the quality is SHOCKING and my friends tend to crowd around the TV to inspect the detail.The menu system is very simple and I figured I would have to calibrate the picture settings, but LG has an "intelligent eye" mode where a light sensor built onto the front of the TV detects the conditions in the room and automatically adjusts the brightness and contrast on the screen.So far, I have had no complaints about the TV's judgement.

Value
The TV came with some welcome extras in the box.The remote is universal and works with almost any device (programming codes are in the manual).The base is detached by default for easy wall-mounting, the owner's manual is on a CD and is searchable (I hope other manufactuers follow suit), and LG even threw in a wiping cloth to keep the glossy black frame clean.There is also a cable restraint and an extra cable to attach to your antenna/cablebox.

By far and away, I feel I got an exceptional value for my money and would highly recommend this panel.

(More customer reviews)I've been in the market for a 55" LCD for over a year.I needed to replace a 55" rear projection TV that was great for it's time, but doesn't have the picture quality of a good LCD.I didn't want to spend a fortune and I've been watching as large LCD's have come down in price.

I purchased this at Costco and I thought the price was a typo.The picture quality of this TV is first rate, and the sound while not great, is better than most.It's fine for regular viewing, but I certainly use my sound system for movies.1080i from Dish is spectacular, and 1080p from Xbox is unbelievable.240Hz makes a big difference in the motion blur of fast scenes - there is virtually none.I'm finally going to pull the trigger on Blue-ray now because this thing is so good.

I love it, my wife loves it, and everyone that sees it is amazed.In my mind it is by far the best value on a top-shelf LCD.

(More customer reviews)So, you are thinking about buying a new TV, but what to choose?If you are wanting a flat panel TV, you can get either a plasma or an LCD.Plasma can be cheaper, and can give a better picture (at the same price point), but plasma weighs more, uses more power, generates more heat, and can burn images into the screen and ruin the TV (which matters if you view things without distorting and/or cropping the image to fit your screen; if you are spending all this money on a HDTV, do you really want distorted or cropped images?).So, I decided for an LCD.The Pros of this TV:

This is an excellent TV for the money.It is the newer version of the 42HL67, which was a "Best Buy" in Consumer Reports, at the price of $1150.It has a better viewing angle than most LCDs, and it is capable of producing a superb picture, once you adjust the picture (unfortunately, the presets leave much to be desired for this, so I recommend getting a setup disc to properly adjust the various settings).Most of the picture settings are bad out of the box, though the tint adjustment is perfect right out of the box (at least mine was).You will need to adjust the settings separately for each input.Although that makes it more trouble to set-up, this is actually a good thing, because you may need different adjustments for different sources, and this way, once you properly set it up, you need not readjust when switching sources to compensate for differences in your sources.

The fact that it is only 720p (actually 768p, but let us not quibble) instead of 1080p is only going to be a problem if you sit very close to the screen.Otherwise, it gives all the resolution one can see (if fed a good HD source).And, of course, it gives all the resolution of the source for all non-HD sources (e.g., DVDs, etc.), and 720p HD sources.It is only less than what is possible with 1080i and 1080p sources (though it will accept such signals and convert them to its resolution).

The over-the-air tuner works fairly well, better than other HDTVs that I have tried.It even has a nice signal strength meter to help one adjust one's antenna.If, like most Americans, you live near a local HD broadcast, you can watch true HD without spending more money than what it costs to get this TV and an inexpensive antenna (I have been using my old antenna that was not designed for HD, and it works fine--and the TV is in my basement!!!--you, of course, should not expect to be so lucky if you put your TV in your basement, but you might be).

All sources look pretty good on this TV, though obviously you will see shortcomings of sources that are less than HD.Analog TV is much worse than 480i digital, which is worse than HD, but, still, it is better with these inferior signals than other HDTVs that I have tried.You will see differences between well made DVDs and poorly made ones.You will be disappointed if you have unrealistic expectations about what it is possible to do with less than ideal sources, but, otherwise, you should be satisfied with the picture you can get with this TV.The Cons:

The owner's manual is poorly written.Really poorly written.Many of the controls have no real explanation for what they do!This is one of the worst manuals I have ever seen for electronic equipment, and there are a lot of poorly written manuals out there.

The so-called "universal" remote that comes with the TV does not work on my equipment, even though they are in the list of brands it is supposed to control.It should control my other equipment, but it does not.And since the remote is not a "learning" remote, there is nothing to be done about it.If it does not control your other equipment after trying the settings in the manual, you are simply out of luck.So, don't count on the remote controlling anything other than the TV itself, though you might be lucky and it might control your DVD player or some other device.

It could use another aspect ratio control to properly view non-anamorphic widescreen DVDs without distortion or cropping (it has one choice that can almost do this ["TheatreWide 2"]; it is generally with minimal cropping which, contrary to what the manual seems to suggest, does not appear to distort the image [I used a test disc with test patterns to see what the various aspect ratios really do]).For undistorted and uncropped 4:3 sources (i.e., the old NTSC or "conventional" aspect ratio), one uses "Natural" (which is also the setting to watch widescreen broadcasts; being "Natural", it keeps the picture in the aspect ratio that it already is).For viewing anamorphic widescreen DVDs undistorted and uncropped, use "Full".Of course, if you like to fill the screen with a distorted and/or cropped image, there are selections for you as well.

This TV, unlike all other HDTVs that I have used, cannot properly handle PAL signals (it simply chops off the bottom of the picture when fed a PAL signal, and the TV says it is receiving a 480i signal instead of the 576i PAL signal).(For those of you who don't know what "PAL" is, this probably won't matter, but in case you are curious, PAL is one of the formats of video used in many other countries which is on some DVDs, video tapes, and other such sources made for foreign markets.If the DVD or video tape is made for the U.S. market, even if it is a foreign film, it will NOT be in PAL, so you need not worry about this when shopping at most stores in the U.S.)In my case, I am thinking about buying an upconverting DVD player to deal with this issue, so that I will not be throwing away lines of resolution by converting to NTSC and then sending the image to this TV.If the TV were not otherwise capable of an excellent picture at its price point, this would cause me to return it, but since I can get an upconverting DVD player to deal with this issue, I think it will be okay for me, and can work for some others who want PAL capability, though if one needs it in the TV itself, one will need to look elsewhere (though good luck finding this kind of picture quality at this price).

Overall, the TV is excellent for the money, and its shortcomings are minimal, considering the price and overall quality.I think most people will be happy with it, and given what else is available, I think it is the best at its price point.It is certainly the best I have seen at its price point.Edited to add (17 September 2008):

The preset settings out of the box, "Sports", "Standard", and "Movie" are all way off the NTSC & ATSC standards for proper picture.If you doubt this, I recommend buying a setup/test disc and adjusting the controls according to it, and then comparing these settings (saved as "Preference") with the three presets mentioned above.With a particular picture, there is, for example, supposed to be a certain amount of color, and having more or less than the right amount is not in accordance with what it is supposed to be.Of course, a particular person may not notice a slight difference, or might even prefer the picture to be off instead of the correct amount, just as people may like to adjust the bass or treble in their audio to suit their tastes (rather than reflect exactly what is recorded).The same idea applies to all of the other picture parameters.Too bad Toshiba did not make their "Standard" preset actually conform to the standards of broadcast television.Ironically, "Movie" is closest to being correct, but it is far enough off that I strongly recommend getting a setup/test disc and adjusting the set properly.If, after watching it a while with it set properly, you decide that you prefer improper settings, you obviously can readjust things to suit your particular tastes, so you will only be out the cost of the disc and the time and trouble to set things up properly.But many people, I think, will find themselves happy with the correct settings, if only they were able to do the adjustments (which, again, require a setup disc).If you want an inexpensive disc, you can go with the Sound & Vision Home Theater Tune-Up available at Amazon.com.

I might also add, the TV is excellent FOR THE MONEY.It is not the best TV ever made, but it is great at its price point, which was just a little more expensive than lousy off brand TVs, but giving performance more comparable with sets costing hundreds more.I am still very happy with my purchase, and now have an Oppo DV-983H DVD player which deals extremely well with my PAL issue mentioned above.The Oppo is also easy to make region free, and is widely regarded as being the best DVD player ever made.

Initial fears about banding were put to rest when my 705 (serial #) worked like a charm.

I use this TV to watch 1080i over the air HD channels, play Nintendo Wii and watch movies on Toshiba A35 1080p.

1080i over the air look fabulous, Wii looks ok when stretched out to fit the screen, 1080p from my A35 looks very well, but I can't recognize the difference between that and 1080i HD channels with a sitting distance of about 9 feet.

I use the TV speakers only for playing Wii and they are sufficient.Anyone who is serious about TV watching should buy decent speakers, one good choice is Onkyo 908 (1,000 watts) for about eight hundred bucks, a cheaper alternative is Logitech 5500's (505 watts of power) for about two hundred fifty.

I bought Digital Video Essentials to make sure I have the proper calibration, some values had to be changed a little, some significantly.Overall result was a darker picture than before, but my amature eyes can't tell if it looks much better or not.This supposedly how it was "meant" to be seen by directors, what would I know?

I wall mounted it a couple of days ago.Here's a tip, DO NOT do it alone.My hands are still shaking just thinking about it.

I bought the mount that handles 36-50" screens (Peerless ST650P) and it worked great.Here's a hint:use the metal spacers unless you want the screws to fall out (manual says you don't need to...but trust me, I mounted the 42" and 46" Sharp TVs and the screws would barely hold).

Cleaning the screen:I use Monster ScreenClean.Yes, it is expensive.But after you use it, you can't tell that the screen was ever used before.Perfectly glossy surface with no dust, no streaks...nothing.I have used it on my laptop, my PC screen and TV, I have seen nothing better.

(More customer reviews)My Sylvania 27" analog TV finally bit the dust after 6 years. Thanks to the federal government's tax stimulus check, I decided to be a good American and help the economy out and purchase a new flat screen TV. I grew interested in the Philips because it was a new model, looked great in person, and was very affordable. I purchased the TV from a major warehouse retailer where you have to pay for an annual membership. It was only $999 online, and I got free shipping and a 2 year extended warranty. If I have any problems, I could just return the set. Only problem is sales tax and it came out to $1086 (CA charges 10 electronics waste fee).

I got the TV last week and it works great. I get about a dozen HD channels over my antenna and the picture looks amazing when its a true HD signal. In fact its even sharper than my DVD player. I'm getting a Phillips upconvert DVD player this week, so hopefully the DVD's will look better. If not, I guess I'm going to have to a 1080p recorder.

The picture looks great. I'm not super-picky and can't tell some of the picture quality differences that other reviewers can. Most of the times, when i compare at the store, the brighter TV looks better to me.

Anyways, the side/off angle viewing is not as good as a Samsung. Even though its 178 degree viewing, the picture loses some luster at the extreme angles. If you plan on watching the TV from 160 degrees, you might want to get something else. The menu is okay, and the tv changes channels more quickly than the 46" Samsung 1080p and does a much better job with managing the audio levels.

It looks nice in person and is much better than what I used to look at, so I'm pretty happy with my purchase. With the extra money I saved from not buying a Bravia for $1600, I could get a 27-32" LCD and put it in my bedroom or alternatively, buy a PS3 and a few games.

Amazon.com had by far the best price around considering that you get free shipping and pay no tax, and trust me I surfed every online site and retail store for over a month before making my purchase.

I was about to go plasma with Samsung, until I saw it in store and hated the reflective black display and case as well as reading several poor customer reviews.This Sony set has a sexy matte black finish and the screen is clear and reflection free in any lighting!Sony TV's in my book are across the board the best blend of top technology, proven durability and quality as well as sleek cool looks.My family has always owned Sony TV's and have never had even one of them serviced, some still running are over 20 years old!

But back to my new KDL-40S3000..... It's a sure crowd pleaser in any home!As of now, there are no HD broadcast channels in the 1080p format, only 1080iwhich this TV with the native resolution of 720p displays vividly, so I would advise you to think about this if you are looking at some of Sony's 1080p models that cost a lot more.Along with the fact that because the majority of broadcast channels besides HD channels (1080i) on Digital cable and I believe even Satellite are still in the 480p format, a TV such as this one with 720p resolution will display a cleaner and sharper image than that of a 1080p model. Bottom line... unless you have a Blu-Ray or HD DVD player and want a barely noticeable sharper picture, Go With 720p, you will save money and not be sacrificing anything trust me!

As for features and sound quality, you will be overwhelmed with what Sony brings to the plate.The menu options and settings are extensive but yet fun with Sony's graphical onscreen display, but the picture right of the box is just as impressive. I am a big fan of surround sound systems, but so far I am completely satisfied with the KDL-40S3000's clear and projecting sound quality, and I seriously question the poor remarks from other reviews about this set being deficient in sound.The audio/video inputs and outputs of this set are numerous and the 2 HDMI hook-ups will meet the needs of most home users considering there are also 2 component connections and various other lower quality connections.

So in closing I would recommend the Sony KDL-40S3000 to any and everyone looking to get into the flat-panel market, hands-down!!! Yes, Sony may be a bit more money than comparable sized other brands, but you are paying for top notch quality, engineering, and styling and you will not regret a cent of it! Set your price range, determine the right size and viewing distance for your room and put Sony at the top of your list when shopping Amazon.com for the best price on your flat-panel TV! Samsung LN40A450 40-Inch 720p LCD HDTV Review

(More customer reviews)I am updating this review after one month, as my knowledge about the product has increased. Basically I think it offers one of the best picture quality available at under $1K. The features that in my opinion set this TV appart are: outstanding HD picture and black levels, anti-glare coating, 3 HDMI inputs, great picture adjustment controls and swivel stand. On the minus side, the sound is tiny and the speakers are prone to vibration if you turn the bass higher. It's not a real concern for me, since I use external speakers anyway. Also, with some older material (not re-mastered) the picture may look a bit grainy. Perhaps not the best choice if you're viewing mostly SD programming.

Here is the original review, with a few minor adjustments:

Colours are deep, rich and accurate when fed a good quality signal through an HDMI or DVI connection. Even dark scenes are beautiful: deep black levels and excellent contrast are better than many plasma TVs. The screen backlight is uniform.There is no noticeable glare from the screen, although the glossy black bezel will show some reflections.

HD material looks excellent. Vibrant colours and outstanding detail give a perception of depths that is very pleasing, especially when watching HD sports channels. I found that component cables provided from my cable company did not work nearly as well. With HDMI/DVI the picture looks much better than it did in the store. I tried three different cables and I settled for a Monster 300 HDMI cable (rated 1080i) which in my opinion works well for this TV and is probably worth the extra few dollars as opposed to lesser brand names.

The Samsung A450 does a good job with high quality SD material and some channels look much better than a CRT of comparable size. There are no banding issues or artifacts that I notice, except to say that old SD material tends to look blurry on a 40 inch set vs the typical 27 inch CRT, which is to be expected. Feeding the signal through an upconverting DVD player seemed to help a bit in this regard. You can also use the upconvert setting on your cable box, but I found it more useful to set it on Auto-DVI.

The 720/1080i display is adequate for this size TV and in HD the picture looks as sharp as I'd ever want. In fact, I set up my cable box to 1080i, rather than the slightly sharper 720p. To my eyes, this resolution seems to give a more natural picture.

The design is quite attractive and the swivel stand is very handy if you put the TV on a stand, rather than hanging it on the wall. These TV's really have only a +- 30 degrees viewing angle before colours start to fade and while this model does better than others that I saw in the store, the swivel feature is a definite plus.

User menus are friendly and provide a vast array of options for picture adjustment. You can store three custom settings for each input (for viewing in bright/normal/dark room). The factory setting are quite good for standard cable TV viewing, but I found that different sources do require adjustment and you will be happy with all the controls that this set provides. One adjustment that CNET recommends is Picture:Picture options: Film mode: auto (rather than off), which should engage the 3:2 pull down for optimum viewing of film based material.

With a picture so sharp and clear, some lower quality material shot in low light (such as concerts and movies) may appear a bit grainy. While the digital noise reduction is largely ineffective, reducing sharpness all the way to zero (if necessary) effectivelly cleans the picture with minimal loss of detail. This is also recommended by CNET for the movie setting. However, someTV's fair better in this regard (for example the PN50A450, which I also own, has excellent noise reduction and even with the larger size, SD channels look better. However, the HD material is sharper and the blacks are deeper on the LN40A450). If you plan to use cable TV, the SA 4250HD box gives a better SD picture than the older 3250, so I would recommend it.

DNIe seems more of an experimental technology at this point. I found it more useful on the larger plasma, and I almost never use it in this LCF. It is mostly useful for sports, giving exceptional sharp and bright picture but at the expense of colour accuracy (especially for the green colour). A little fiddling with the green/red balance (about 10% towards red) will produce a more natural effect. For the standard/movie settings, where colour accuracy is the main consideration and sharpness not as important, DNIe is disabled. All in all, with so many adjustment options, in the quest for that perfect picture, you will, at first, find yourself reaching for the remote control more often than you really want, which is why having three custom setting per input is so useful - a feature that most TV's in this price range lack.

Set-up is easy. The set is quite light (40 pounds) and can be handled by just one person. Once plugged in, it will find all available channels and external sources. You can customize the names for each source, which makes it easier to identify them.

Motion blur doesn't seem to be a problem with this set, at least so far. There was only one instance that I noticed and re-booting the STB eliminated the problem.However, plasma TV's still seem to have the edge here (at least on paper), but I decided to go with LCD, since I like the extra brightness and colour definition that it offers and black levels and contrast are excellent and comparable to the Panasonic TH42PX80 for example. Since I looked at this Panasonic set in detail, I can add that the colour accuracy on the Samsung is better. This is even more important since the Panasonic lacks some of the picture adjustment options. In the trade-off however, you give up a couple of inches of screen size and perhaps a higher quality cabinet.

For a budget TV, this thing has a fantastic picture and some great features. Calibrating the colors took a little bit of effort but once out of the way the thing is fantastic. The sound is great too, but I'm no audiophile. Sounds good to me, though.
